Ceramic tiles, porcelain tiles, terracotta tiles, stone tiles, slate tiles and granite tiles are just some of the types of tiles that can be found on the market today.

Clay and water create the basic structure for ceramic tiles. In order to get the tiles final finish and colour, the upper layer of the tile is coated with ceramic and baked in a kiln to fuse it with the body of the frame. Ceramic tiles have so many advantages that make them a popular buy; these include durability, easy maintenance, waterproof, fire resistant, versatile, scratchproof and environmentally friendly. The difference between porcelain and ceramic tiles is that porcelain are made out of a finer clay and are baked at a higher range of heat; this gives them a greater density. Porcelain tiles have a higher percentage of water, stain, odour and bacteria resistance and are a brilliant selection for exterior tiling. For years to come, the tiles most suitable for areas which are prone to excessive foot traffic are porcelain tiles.

Natural Stone: These types of tiles do not contain a glazed coating like the ceramic and porcelain tiles but you could use them as an alternative if you want to create a different look. Stone tiles include marble, slate and granite tiles and can be found in two textures, the polished tiles that have a glossy finish but can be slippery and the honed tiles that have a dull look but are comparatively less slippery.

Marble Tiles: This timeless classic will add elegance to any interior where it is used. A distinctive look by each piece of marble gives the area a natural sophistication. Honing and polishing gives marble the desired look. These tiles are delicate and attractive and most ideal for interior walls but they must be avoided in areas that are prone to accumulation of water and grease. Bathroom tiles are therefore not normally made of this.

Granite Tiles: These tiles are the most hard-wearing of all flooring tiles. The volcanic reaction creates granite, but it’s the mica, quartz and feldspar that give it its distinctive character. Like marble each tile is different from the other and forms an intriguing pattern when laid on the floor. The polishing and honing of these tiles can be done to your liking and are both suitable for interior and exterior walls. However granite with a polished finish should not be used for areas where there is water and grease retention.

Slate Tiles: These tiles are fine metamorphic rocks with bits of metal in it that became a part of its years of slow formation in the earth’s surface. This natural stone can withstand harsh abrasions, chemicals and fading and also is impermeable to freeze and thaw tests, therefore making it long-lasting. The tiles that are suitable for both interior and exterior walls are slate tiles. You do however have to be careful as they are not suitable in places where water and grease accululate.
